Planning: Claude skills backed by calculation code
US retirement and tax planning calculations - tax year 2026 bracket headroom for sizing Roth conversions, required minimum distributions, retirement Monte Carlo with inflation-adjusted withdrawals, capital-loss netting and carryover, and net investment income tax - plus guidance for broader household planning that the engines do not model.
What wealth-planning calculates
5 commands, each available in the CLI, as an MCP tool and as a JavaScript import. Every result carries the method it used, the questions it still needs answered and the next steps worth taking.
| Command | What it returns | What it needs |
|---|---|---|
planning tax-headroom | Room left in the current federal ordinary-income bracket, for sizing a Roth conversion. | agi, filingStatus |
planning rmd | Required minimum distribution from the Uniform Lifetime Table. | age, balance |
planning monte-carlo | Retirement cash-flow simulation with inflation-adjusted withdrawals. | assets, spend |
planning capital-losses | Nets short- and long-term gains and losses, applies the $3,000 limit, and carries the rest forward by character. | shortTermLosses |
planning niit | Net investment income tax: 3.8% on the lesser of investment income or MAGI above the statutory threshold. | magi, netInvestmentIncome |
When to use it
- Build or evaluate a household financial plan or retirement income strategy.
- Estimate Roth conversion headroom from a client's AGI (read the AGI from the return yourself; there is no tax-return parser).
- Calculate Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) for retirement accounts.
- Run Monte Carlo simulations for retirement success probability.
Requests this pack answers:
- “how much can they convert to a Roth this year”
- “are they near the top of their tax bracket”
- “what is their RMD this year”
- “how much must they withdraw from the IRA”
- “will their money last”
- “can they retire on this”
- “how much of this loss can they deduct”
- “what carries over to next year”
- “will they owe the 3.8% tax”
- “net investment income tax”
What it does not do
Named here because leaving it out is how an agent ends up asserting something the code never computed.
Guidance only, no engine behind it
- Parsing Form 1040 or other tax documents
- Estate document review and estate tax projections
- Household budgeting and cash-flow statements
- Insurance, Social Security claiming, and state tax analysis
Limits to state with every result
- Bracket headroom uses only the standard deduction and ordinary-income brackets. It ignores itemized deductions, credits, capital-gain and qualified-dividend stacking, NIIT, IRMAA thresholds and state tax.
- RMDs use the prior December 31 balance. Use the Joint and Last Survivor Table instead when the sole beneficiary is a spouse more than 10 years younger.
- Monte Carlo assumes normally distributed annual returns and ignores taxes and fees.
Run it
node bin/wealth-skills.js planning tax-headroom --agi 210000 --status MFJ
node bin/wealth-skills.js planning rmd --age 75 --balance 500000
node bin/wealth-skills.js planning monte-carlo --assets 1250000 --spend 50000 --inflation 0.025
The same commands are exposed as MCP tools, so Claude, Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and any other MCP client can call them directly. See the integration guide and the pack itself, skills/wealth-planning/SKILL.md.

Questions it answers
How much can they convert to a Roth this year?
Room left in the current federal ordinary-income bracket, for sizing a Roth conversion. Run planning tax-headroom in the CLI, or call the same tool over MCP. It needs agi and filingStatus. Bracket headroom is measured from taxable income, which starts at AGI. The result carries the method it used, the data it used, anything still missing and the next steps worth taking, for a licensed professional to review.
What is their RMD this year?
Required minimum distribution from the Uniform Lifetime Table. Run planning rmd in the CLI, or call the same tool over MCP. It needs age and balance. The distribution period comes from their age. The result carries the method it used, the data it used, anything still missing and the next steps worth taking, for a licensed professional to review.
Will their money last?
Retirement cash-flow simulation with inflation-adjusted withdrawals. Run planning monte-carlo in the CLI, or call the same tool over MCP. It needs assets and spend. The simulation starts from this balance. The result carries the method it used, the data it used, anything still missing and the next steps worth taking, for a licensed professional to review.
How much of this loss can they deduct?
Nets short- and long-term gains and losses, applies the $3,000 limit, and carries the rest forward by character. Run planning capital-losses in the CLI, or call the same tool over MCP. It needs shortTermLosses. Netting happens within each term before the terms offset each other. The result carries the method it used, the data it used, anything still missing and the next steps worth taking, for a licensed professional to review.
Will they owe the 3.8% tax?
Net investment income tax: 3.8% on the lesser of investment income or MAGI above the statutory threshold. Run planning niit in the CLI, or call the same tool over MCP. It needs magi and netInvestmentIncome. The tax applies only to MAGI above the threshold. The result carries the method it used, the data it used, anything still missing and the next steps worth taking, for a licensed professional to review.
